Alma Segoviano – Advancing Environmental Justice, Land Rights, and Racial Equity
Alma Segoviano is a Senior Legal Advisor with over 18 years of experience in environmental justice, land tenure, property rights, conflict transformation, and sustainable development. She has collaborated with international organizations such as USAID, UNODC, WWF, RFFUK, and FARM COMMONS, and led advocacy efforts for indigenous forest peoples in the DRC, securing land rights through peaceful, non-judicial means.
Her academic background includes an LLB from Universidad Iberoamericana, an LLM from the London School of Economics, and a PhD in Law from Birkbeck, University of London, where her research highlighted the role of Mexico’s ejido system in advancing sustainability and equity. She is fluent in Spanish, English, Danish, Italian, and is learning Sign Language and French.
Alma teaches at the Universidad del Medio Ambiente (UMA), where she coordinates a Certificate in Socio-environmental Conflict Transformation and mentors’ future leaders. She is involved with the American Society of International Law, the Environmental Peacebuilding and Energy Bar Associations.
Founder of KHaRMAlma Land & Environmental Justice (KALEJ), Alma created this initiative to empower indigenous, rural, and Afro-descendant communities through legal advocacy, capacity building, and inclusive governance. Her work bridges legal innovation and community wisdom to address climate challenges and promote collective rights.
