OUR APPROACH

We take a community-first and community-driven approach to eliminate systemic barriers to overburdened communities and aim to engage in community science that rejects extractive or colonial practices – that is action-oriented, solutions-focused, and justice-centered. This means we strive to serve as a link between underserved communities and community-based organizations, environmental advocacy groups, health professionals, researchers, policymakers, faith-based groups, and government agencies in identifying and addressing environmental justice and health issues through INpowerment and Liberation Science.

What is “INpowerment Science”?

“INpowerment” Science includes community-based participatory research (CBPR), citizen science, community-owned and managed research (COMR) principles, and the Collaborative-Problem Solving (CPS) Model with a focus on equitable planning, healthy zoning, and sustainable community development. CEEJH INC trains residents impacted by locally unwanted land uses (LULUs), pollution, and other environmental hazards to use science for action, justice, and positive social change following the INpowerment Science frameworks. CEEJH INC builds coalitions and partnerships to understand and address environmental, climate, and energy injustices and related health inequities primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region – Maryland, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia.

What is Liberation Science

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.

Our Partnerships

CEEJH is a founding-member of the Mid-Atlantic Justice Coalition (MAJC). MAJC strives to unite communities to address social, racial, and environmental justice issues, focusing on sustainable solutions and policy advocacy.

Our Projects

Mid-Atlantic Environmental Justice Fund (MAEJF)

Funded by USDA, the MAEJF invites applications from community based organizations and non-profits interested in addressing local environmental justice issues and enhancing public health through forestry-related projects. Technical assistance will be provided to organizations that need it the most, especially to assist them with the planning and implementation of forestry projects. This program has three tracks: Environmental Justice Organization Capacity Building (up to $100,000), Tree Canopy for Resiliency and Public Health (no max request amount), and Workforce Development in Community Forestry (Request up to $200,000).

Environmental Justice Government to Government

In partnership with the Maryland Department of the Environment, CEEJH INC supports the G2G project by advancing small-scale greening efforts for pollution mitigation, expanding equitable access to green spaces, and building the capacity of community-based organizations (CBOs) to secure greening-related grants. We conduct community surveys to assess perceptions of green space needs, health impacts, and challenges in long-term maintenance. We also identify under-resourced CBOs serving communities facing environmental and climate injustices, offering technical assistance and involving them in project development and health impact monitoring. Our Climate Justice Fellows and Environmental Justice Scholars programs support these efforts through trainings and local engagement.
