In 2012, Dr. Wilson began engaging residents in Curtis, Bay, Maryland, a South Baltimore neighborhood already overburdened by industrial hazards and port-related activities, in response to a plan for building Energy Answers, the largest trash incinerator in the country. The incinerator would have been the nation’s largest—even bigger than the existing BRESCO facility (pictured below). We collaborated on outreach and technical assistance to the community with Environmental Integrity Project (EIP), Free Your Voice, and United Workers. This technical assistance included in the development of a Health Impact Assessment to assess the potential health impacts of the new incinerator on local residents and plans for monitoring particulate matter associated with local stationary and mobile sources of pollution.
