Hyperlocal Air Quality Monitoring in Cheverly, Maryland

In 2019, the Mayor and Town Council of Cheverly approached CEEJH with concerns about increasing air emissions in their 1.32 mi2 town. With high daily traffic volumes and heavy industrial activity nearby, the Council wanted to take action to measure existing air pollution and monitor future emissions. Importantly, the Maryland Department of Environment has only two locations for regulatory monitoring in Prince George’s County. For the citizens of Cheverly, this means that reports on the air they breathe are based on readings made miles and miles away. CEEJH is working with the town government and local volunteers to establish a network of PurpleAir and Aeroqual air quality monitors throughout Cheverly and surrounding areas. In addition to deploying monitors, CEEJH has also engaged community members by providing virtual and in-the-field training workshops on installing monitors and accessing and analyzing data. Currently deployed monitors can be viewed here.
